Sizes, Slicing, and Servings

Servings by Cake Size
These are rough estimates and depend on how you slice your cake. For smaller servings (like wedding cake portions), you will get more servings per cake. All cakes are three layers. Tall cakes (one extra layer) will also add to your number of servings.

5”—up to 8 servings

6”—10–14 servings

8”—up to 28 servings

9”—up to 30 servings

Cake Cutting Method
This method of cutting a cake is less traditional than the triangle slices you’re probably used to with a birthday cake. However, this pattern is used for slicing cakes at weddings, and will yield the most servings.

If you cut your cake according to the guide below, you will the most servings out of your cake. Adjust serving sizes as wanted/needed.

First, cut the top horizontal line. Place large slice cake-side-down on a cutting board, and then cut vertically to get your servings off of that slice. Place slices on serving plates. Move to the next horizontal line, place large slice on cutting board, and then cut the servings.

Continue the pattern for the remainder of the cake. Each horizontal slice should be one inch thick.
I recommend using a large, sharp knife (the kind you’d use to chop an onion). Clean the knife before each large horizontal cut to keep things (a little) less messy.
